Shadowrun (Video Game)

Posted on: August 24, 2011

Shadowrun is a Role-Playing game for the Nintendo SNES that was released in 1993. It should not be confused with the Xbox 360 or Windows PC game of the same name. The game was developed by Beam Entertainment, now Krome Studios, which is based in Melbourne, Australia and published by the now-defunct Japanese company Data East, famous for their custom pinball machines based on popular film properties such as Back to the Future, The Simpsons, Batman, as well as the rock group Guns N' Roses. Data East had limited success in software and would eventually declare bankruptcy in 2003. Game Story: The existence of the main character, Jake Armitage, was created to pay homage to a character in the William Gibson novel Neuromancer. The story takes place in Seattle, where Jake is shot and wakes to find that he is missing his identity. Jake is mentioned as a "Shadowrunner" (mercenary). Throughout the game, the player helps Jake pick up the pieces to discover who he really is. Lost: Via Domas has a similar game design though it is within the Lost universe. Gameplay: Shadowrun is a combination of a role playing game with real-time action, meaning that the game requires quick reflexes. It is not a turn-based game in the style of Final Fantasy, but more in the style of Kingdom Hearts. Throughout the game, Jake has the option to hire Shadowrunners to assist, but this is not necessary.
